Last year, we dined at 1923 and made some really solid dinner choices. This year, we tried a few different choices for dinner. Did we find some hidden gems, or did we strike out?
One improvement from last year!
1923 is one of the three main dining rooms on the Disney Wish. The theme harkens back to the 1920s when Walt Disney Studios was founded. As such, the decor consists of display cases featuring drawings, concept art, and character drawings from many of Disney’s major animated films. If you’re a fan of Disney movies, this dining room is a feast for the eyes!
This year, we noticed a major improvement at 1923 compared to last year. 1923 is divided into two smaller dining rooms: Walt Disney and Roy Disney. Last year, when 1923 appeared in our Disney Cruise Line app as the dinner location for that evening, we didn’t know which dining room our table was located in. Basically, you had to guess. Pick a dining room entrance and hope for the best. However, this year…

Thank you DCL app for taking the guesswork out of this dining room! We’re not sure why it took this long to specify which side of 1923 guests need to go to, but it’s a welcome change we’re happy to see!

Fun story: while waiting in line for the dining room to open, several high ranking Disney Wish cast members were greeting guests nearby. I recognized a familiar face, so I kindly asked the people around me to hold my spot while I ran over to say hi. Our Cruise Director on the Disney Wish for this cruise was the Cruise Director on the Disney Dream when I took my first cruise two years ago! She didn’t recognize me (I didn’t expect her to), but I recognized her!

Back to dinner!
Of course there’s bread.

I guess in the 1920s, they were a fan of fancy odd combinations. The bread at 1923 is a fig and olive loaf. Not exactly a fan of this, since I don’t care for olives. It’s served with honey butter, which we all cared for!
Duck what?

We thought we’d be fancy and try something totally new and kind of weird to us. We ordered the Kingswell Duck Confit Pastilla. This is made with Dates, Apricot, Ginger, Red Pepper, Saffron, and Black Raspberry Jam.

Um, I’m not sure what we were thinking. It wasn’t a favorite, but we didn’t hate it. Yes, it was a little weird and unusual, but you never know if you don’t try it! Heck, if this is too far for you, you could always request the Hyperion Four-Cheese Tri-Color Tortelloni which is one of our favorites from last year.
Our favorite soup!

The roasted tomato soup looked like marinara sauce, so instead we ordered our favorite soup from last year: Pulled Guinea Hen Corn Chowder. This tasty chowder is made with Yukon Gold Potato, Cilantro, and Smoked Bacon. It’s not a thick chowder, but it is a satisfying corn chowder.
We are not a fan of these.

Our friends recommended we try the Buena Vista Soft Shell Tacos. From the vegetarian menu, these tacos are made with Coconut Oil Quinoa, Poblano, Sweet Bell Pepper, Salsa Fresca, Feta Cheese, Pickled Red Onions, and Cashew Cream.
The coconut oil quinoa looks similar to ground beef, so mentally we thought it might be similar to ground beef tacos. Oh no! We are not a fan of these. In fact, we’re questioning our friend’s judgement who said these were good. I guess “good” is subjective because we did not care for these, nor would we call them good. The tacos from Donald’s Cantina, now those were good!
Steak to the rescue!

Thank you, filet mignon, for saving the day! We also ordered the 1923 Peppered Filet Mignon. This tasty dinner choice is served with Buttered Long Green Beans, Smoked Bacon, and Crushed Fingerling Potato Hash.
The steak was great, and well cooked despite being such a thick cut. We found the green beans to be unique. They were good, for sure, but wrapping them in bacon was a presentation choice we wouldn’t have considered. The potato hash was, in our opinion, fancy mashed potatoes.
Churros? Okay I guess.

We ordered churros as an experiment. We’ve heard the churros at Disneyland are amazing! We’ve tried churros at Disney World, and they were disappointing. Where will the churros on Disney Cruise Line land?
Slightly above Disney World. The Churros Calientes are made with Sugar Spice Churros and Dulce de Leche. We found the sauce to be okay, but it alone could not save these churros, which were a little tough to chew. We hoped for soft and doughy churros and these were not it.
So we tried another dessert.

We ate the gold flake instead of saving it to cash in later. To end dinner on a positive note, we tried the Atwater Fuji Apple Cheesecake Tart. This is made with Sweet Dough Shell, Caramelized Apples, Cinnamon Cheesecake, and Rolled Oat Crumble. The tart bottom is a little crumbly, as we expected.
However, the Fuji apples were tasty (as Fuji apples are). The cinnamon cheesecake on top was nice, without being overpowering with cinnamon. Think of this as a fancy apple pie. All it needed was some ice cream.
So what did you think?
We think 1923 is similar to Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s upscale without being fancy. The menu is elevated without being too intimidating to a non-foodie. There are several solid, comfortable choices, along with a few if you want to try something different.
The best part of dinner in this, along with the other dining rooms, on the Disney Wish is if you want to try something different and don’t care for it, simply let your server know and they can bring you something else. Like those quinoa tacos: we’re not making that mistake again.
